Modern lines look sharpest on a design with the same restraint. Browse our modern wedding invitation templates for editorial layouts and confident typography, all built as a digital wedding invitation guests open from one link.

What makes wording “modern”

  • The couple host, or “together with their families” replaces a list of parents.
  • First-person or couple-centred phrasing: “invite you to celebrate” rather than “request the pleasure of your company”.
  • Dates and times in numerals, often on one line.
  • Names in whichever order reads best: alphabetical, the way you say them, or by who designed the invitation.
  • Short lines and plenty of white space. Every extra word has to earn its place.

If you want something more laid-back, with jokes or exclamation marks, look at our casual wedding invitation wording. If you want tradition, see formal wording.

Modern RSVP, dress code and website lines

  • RSVP: “Reply by 1 May”, or “RSVP by 1 May · it takes a minute”.
  • Dress code: “Black tie optional”, “Cocktail attire”, “Summer smart”.
  • Website: “Everything else is on our website.”
  • Adults only: “An adults-only celebration”. More options are in our adults-only wording guide.

How to keep modern wording from feeling cold

Minimal wording can tip into sounding like a calendar notification. Three small fixes help:

  • Keep one warm verb: “celebrate”, “love”, “join”.
  • Add one personal line: where you met, a shared joke, a nod to the venue.
  • Send the link with a short personal message rather than on its own. Our digital invitation message examples show how.

Modern wedding invitation wording questions

What is the difference between modern and casual wedding invitation wording?
Modern wording is clean and minimal but still polished, suited to editorial designs and stylish city or destination weddings. Casual wording is more conversational and playful, suited to barbecues, garden parties and relaxed celebrations.
Can I write the date in numbers on a wedding invitation?
Yes, on a modern invitation. “Saturday 12 June 2027” or “12.06.2027” are both fine. Only formal invitations need the date written in words.
Whose name goes first on a modern wedding invitation?
There is no rule. Couples choose alphabetical order, the order they usually say their names, or whatever looks balanced in the design.
Do modern invitations still need an RSVP date?
Yes. A clear reply-by date matters more than any wording choice. With a digital invitation the RSVP button sits directly beneath it.
