The guest list does most of the work. With digital wedding invitations you can send each household a personal link with a set number of seats, so the RSVP itself matches who is invited and there is less room for confusion.

Start with the names

Children are invited only when they are named. An invitation addressed to “Mr and Mrs Patel” invites two adults; “The Patel Family” invites the children too. Get this right before you worry about the wording.

  • Address the invitation and message to the adults by name.
  • Set the number of seats for each household so the RSVP cannot add more.
  • Mention it once on the invitation, once on the website, and in the RSVP wording.
  • Tell close family personally before invitations go out.

Adults-only wording for the invitation

Warm
We love your little ones, but our celebration will be adults only.
Simple
An adults-only celebration
Formal
Respectfully, an adults-only reception
Night off
Our wedding is adults only, so book the babysitter and enjoy a night off!
Grateful
Although we adore your children, we are only able to accommodate adults and hope you enjoy an evening off.

Avoid lines such as “No children allowed”, which read as a rule rather than an invitation.

Wording for your wedding website

The website is the right place for a little more explanation, often as an FAQ. Our wedding website checklist shows where it fits.

Website FAQ
Can we bring our children? We love your little ones, but we have chosen to make our wedding an adults-only celebration. We hope this gives you the chance to relax and enjoy a night off with us.
With a reason
Because of venue capacity, we are only able to invite the children of immediate family. Thank you for understanding.

Wording with exceptions

Exceptions are fine. Explain the rule, not the individuals.

  • Family children: “We are only able to include the children of immediate family.”
  • Wedding party: “Children in the wedding party are, of course, very welcome.”
  • Babies: “Babies in arms are welcome; otherwise our celebration is adults only.”
  • Ceremony only: “Children are warmly welcome at the ceremony; the reception is adults only.”

Adults-only RSVP wording

RSVP
We have reserved 2 seats in your honour. Kindly reply by 1 May.

On a personal Aurelia invitation, the seats you give each household are the most the guest can reply for. More reply lines are in our wedding RSVP wording guide.

Replies to tricky questions

Someone may ask anyway. Keep the answer kind and consistent.

If a guest asks to bring their children
We completely understand, and we’re sorry we can’t include everyone. We’ve kept the whole day adults only, so we hope you can still come and enjoy a night off.
If a guest has to decline
We totally understand, and we’ll miss you. Let’s get together soon so we can celebrate with the kids too.

Wording on the day itself

If a guest arrives with children anyway, a calm word from a coordinator or a close friend is better than a scene. Brief someone you trust in advance, and keep a list of local babysitters handy for a destination wedding.

Thoughtful extras for parents

  • Give generous notice so parents can arrange childcare, especially for a weekend away.
  • For destination weddings, share local babysitting or hotel kids’ club details on your website.
  • Consider a children’s room with a sitter if many guests are travelling with family.

Adults-only wedding wording questions

How do you politely say no kids on a wedding invitation?
Address the invitation only to the adults invited, then add one warm line such as “We love your little ones, but our celebration will be adults only.” Repeat it on your website and RSVP.
Is it rude to have an adults-only wedding?
No. It is a common choice for budget, venue or atmosphere reasons. What matters is telling guests clearly and early, and applying the rule consistently.
Should adults-only be written on the invitation itself?
A short line is helpful, especially with a digital invitation where the RSVP sits right below it. Some formal couples rely only on the names and put the note on their website.
Can you make exceptions for some children?
Yes. Base the exception on a clear rule, such as immediate family or the wedding party, and say so on your website so guests understand.
