What is a digital save the date?

A save the date is the first note your guests receive: your names, the wedding date and where it will be, so they can hold the day before the formal invitation arrives. A digital save the date does the same job as a printed card, but it lives at a link you can send anywhere in seconds.

Because it is a web page rather than a picture, guests can add the date straight to their calendar and watch the countdown to your day. That is especially useful for destination weddings and international families, who need time to book flights and leave.

When to send your save the dates

Most couples send save the dates six to eight months before the wedding. For a destination wedding, or when many guests travel from abroad, nine to twelve months gives everyone time to plan. Your formal invitation then follows eight to twelve weeks before the day, with the full details and the final RSVP.

What to put on a save the date

Keep it short. Your names, the date and the city or region are enough; a venue can wait for the invitation if it is not booked yet. Add a photo if you have one you love, and a line such as “Formal invitation to follow” so guests know more is coming.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Choose a free design, personalise it, publish your save the date and share the link with your guests. There is no trial period and no watermark on the design.

A save the date only asks guests to hold the day, so it has no RSVP form. You collect replies with your wedding invitation, which has a full RSVP with plus-ones and dietary needs.

Your names, wedding date, and city or location are usually enough. You can also add a photo and a short note that a formal invitation will follow.

Couples commonly send them six to eight months before their wedding, or nine to twelve months ahead for destination weddings.

Yes. Every save the date has “Add to calendar” buttons for Google Calendar and for Apple and Outlook calendars.

Only people with the link can open it. Save the date pages are kept out of search engines, and you can switch yours off at any time.

Absolutely. When you are ready, choose one of Aurelia’s premium wedding invitation designs to share the schedule, venue, travel details and the formal RSVP in one complete wedding website.
