Treat each message as a starting point: swap in the gift, a moment you remember and a plan to meet. Sharing photos too? A wedding website can hold them while the cards carry the personal thanks.

How to Write a Wedding Thank You Card

The four elements of a thoughtful thank you note

  • Greeting: use the names they go by. “Dear Auntie Jo” beats “Dear Mrs Clarke” if that is what you call her.
  • Gift acknowledgement: name the gift, or say what money will go towards.
  • Personal detail: one memory from the day or one way you will use the gift. Guests remember this line.
  • Closing: a look ahead (“see you at Christmas”) and both your names.

A simple wedding thank you card formula

Thank them for coming, thank them for the gift, say how you will use it, mention a moment from the day, and sign off. Here is the formula filled in:

Classic guest and gift thank you
Dear Sarah and James, Thank you so much for celebrating our wedding with us. Your presence made our day even more special, and we’re so grateful for your thoughtful gift. We can’t wait to see you again soon! With love, Olivia & Tom
Ivory thank you card numbered in four parts: “Dear Sarah and James”, thanks for celebrating with them, thanks for the gift, and “We can’t wait to see you again soon! With love, Olivia & Tom”
The four parts of a thoughtful note: greeting, a personal detail, the gift, and a warm closing.

How to personalise your message

Keep a running list as gifts arrive: who gave what, plus anything you noticed on the day. Write a few cards a night rather than fifty in a weekend; tiredness shows. Split the list by side of the family and both sign every card.

Two cards on sage linen: a short note, “Thank you for being part of our day”, beside a personal one to Charlotte and Ed remembering them in the second row
Short is fine. One specific memory is what makes a note feel personal.

Short and Sweet Wedding Thank You Card Wording

Short messages suit postcards, notes tucked into a photo print, or guests you know less well. Add the person’s name and both of yours.

Short thank you messages (1)
Thank you for being part of our day. It wouldn’t have been the same without you. Thank you for the lovely gift and for dancing until the very last song. We felt so loved on our wedding day, and you were a big part of that. Thank you. Thank you for travelling to celebrate with us. It meant the world. Your card made us both smile. Thank you for your kindness and your gift.
Short thank you messages (2)
Thank you for the beautiful frame. Our first wedding photo is already in it. From the ceremony to the sparklers, we loved having you there. Thank you. Thank you for your generous gift and your even more generous hugs. Our wedding day went by in a flash, but we’ll remember seeing you there. Thank you. Thank you for being there as we said “I do”. Love from the new Mr and Mrs Hughes.
Formal thank you wording
Dear Mr and Mrs Whitfield, thank you for attending our wedding and for your generous gift. We were delighted to share the day with you and are most grateful for your kindness. Dear Dr Patel, we would like to thank you sincerely for the elegant crystal decanter. It will have pride of place at our first dinner party, and we hope you will join us for it. Dear Lady Ashworth, thank you for joining us at St Mary’s and for your gracious gift. Your presence on our wedding day was a great honour to us both.
Casual thank you wording
Hey Mia! Thanks a million for coming and for the gift. That ceilidh was your fault and we loved every minute. Ben, thank you for the gift and for keeping Grandad company at the bar all night. Legend. Hi Chloe and Sam, thank you for making the trip and for bringing the best energy to the dance floor. Pub soon?

Wedding Thank You Card Wording for Different Gifts

Name the gift, or what money will become; a specific plan reads as gratitude rather than a receipt. Gift notes for the invitation itself are in our wedding invitation wording guide.

Thank you wording for money and cash gifts

Avoid stating the amount. Say “generous gift” and then what it is helping with.

Cash gift: towards a home
Dear Aunt Helen and Uncle Rob, Thank you so much for your generous gift. It is going straight into our house fund, and we promise you’ll be among the first round for dinner once we have the keys. With love, Priya & Daniel
Cash gift: towards something specific
Dear Fiona, thank you for your very generous gift. We have put it towards a proper dining table, so every Sunday roast from now on is partly thanks to you.
Cash gift: still deciding
Dear Mark and Lisa, thank you for your kind and generous gift. We are saving it for something special for our first home together, and we will send a photo when we have chosen. Thank you for being there to celebrate with us.

Thank you wording for registry gifts

Registry gift: kitchen
Dear Hannah and Joe, thank you for the stand mixer! It has already produced one slightly lopsided birthday cake, and we hope you’ll come and try a better one soon.
Registry gift: homeware
Dear Mrs Barnes, thank you for the beautiful linen bedding from our list. It is exactly what we chose, and it makes our little flat feel properly grown-up.
Registry gift: group present
Dear all at the Leeds office, thank you for clubbing together for the dinner service. Twelve place settings means we have no excuse not to host you all.

Thank you wording for honeymoon fund contributions

Honeymoon fund: an experience
Dear Grandma and Grandpa, thank you for your gift to our honeymoon fund. It paid for a sunset boat trip around the Amalfi Coast, and we raised a glass to you both on board.
Honeymoon fund: before you travel
Dear Kate and Liam, thank you for contributing to our honeymoon. We leave for Lisbon next month and have earmarked your gift for a long, lazy lunch by the river. Postcard to follow!
Three thank you cards on blush linen for a cash gift towards a dining table, a stand mixer from the registry, and a honeymoon fund boat trip
Name the gift, or say what money went towards: it reads very differently from a general thank you.

Thank you wording for personalised gifts

Personalised gift: keepsake
Dear Emily, thank you for the hand-painted portrait of our venue. You captured the old barn perfectly, and it now hangs in the hallway where we see it every morning.
Personalised gift: handmade
Dear Nana, thank you for the quilt. Knowing you stitched every square by hand makes it the most precious thing we own. We’ll bring it on our first picnic as a married couple.

Thank You Messages for Wedding Guests

Thank you for attending our wedding

Attended: warm
Dear Charlotte and Ed, thank you for celebrating with us. Seeing you both in the second row as we walked back down the aisle is one of our favourite memories of the day.
Attended: with a nod to the day
Dear Tom, thank you for coming and for braving the rain between the church and the reception. You kept everyone laughing under that marquee, and we are so glad you were there.

For guests who travelled a long distance

Travelled from abroad
Dear Sophie and Mateo, thank you for flying all the way from Madrid to be with us. We know how much it took to get there, and having you in the room meant more than we can say.
Long journey within the country
Dear Uncle Pete, thank you for driving down from Inverness to celebrate with us. Eight hours in the car and still first on the dance floor: we are in awe.

For guests who couldn’t attend

Couldn’t attend: with a gift
Dear Margaret, we missed you on the day but felt your love all the same. Thank you for the beautiful vase, which held my bouquet that evening. We will come and visit with the photos soon.
Couldn’t attend: no gift
Dear Ravi and Asha, thank you for your lovely card and kind wishes. We were sorry you couldn’t be with us, and we would love to take you out for dinner when you are next in London.

For guests who attended without giving a gift

Thank them for their presence and leave gifts out entirely. Never hint that one is missing.

Attended, no gift: friend
Dear Jess, thank you for being there to celebrate with us. Your speech at the evening do was the funniest five minutes of the whole day.
Attended, no gift: colleague
Dear Andrew, thank you so much for coming to our wedding. It meant a lot to have you there, and we hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did.

Wedding Thank You Wording for Family and Friends

Parents and in-laws

To parents who hosted or contributed
Dear Mum and Dad, there is no card big enough for this. Thank you for every phone call, every spreadsheet and every penny you put into our wedding. Watching you dance together at the end of the night was the best moment of all. All our love, Amelia & James
To parents: short
Dad, thank you for walking me down the aisle and for not crying until the speeches. I love you.
To new in-laws
Dear Susan and Richard, thank you for welcoming me into your family so completely. Your toast made me feel like I had always belonged, and I am so lucky to call you family.

Bridesmaids, groomsmen, best man and ushers

In the UK, the groom’s side is usually a best man and ushers; in the US, groomsmen. Use whichever titles your wedding party actually had.

To a bridesmaid
Dear Lucy, thank you for steaming my dress, finding my lost earring and holding my hand before the doors opened. I could not have done it without you.
To the maid of honour
Dear Grace, thank you for being my maid of honour and my calm in the chaos. The hen weekend, the speech, the emergency plasters: you thought of everything.
To the best man
Dear Olly, thank you for keeping the rings safe, the stag do mostly legal and the speech mostly clean. You were the best best man.
To ushers or groomsmen
Dear Harry, Kwame and Finn, thank you for showing everyone to their seats, rounding up the family for photos and carrying Nan’s chair across the lawn. You were brilliant.

Close friends

Close friend who helped
Dear Nina, thank you for spending the night before our wedding tying 120 ribbons to jam jars. The tables looked beautiful because of you.
Lifelong friend
Dear Alex, you were there when we met and you were there when we married. Thank you for twenty years of friendship and one unforgettable day.

Wedding suppliers (vendors)

UK couples say suppliers; US couples say vendors. Add a review: it helps a small business more than anything.

To the photographer
Dear Laura, thank you for capturing our day so beautifully. You made two camera-shy people feel at ease, and we have already looked at the gallery far too many times. A glowing review is on its way.
To the florist
Dear Bloom & Stem team, thank you for the flowers. The arch was exactly what we pictured, and guests are still sending us photos of the table arrangements.
To the venue coordinator
Dear Claire, thank you for handling everything on the day so we didn’t have to. When the rain came, you had the ceremony moved indoors before we even noticed.

Funny, Modern and Formal Wedding Thank You Messages

Match the tone to the person, not to the wedding.

Funny thank you messages
Thank you for the toaster. We promise to think of you every time we burn the crumpets. Thank you for coming! We have reviewed the footage and can confirm your dance moves will be discussed for years. Thank you for the gift and for not mentioning the bit where the groom forgot his vows.
Modern thank you messages
Thank you for being part of our story. The day was everything we hoped for, and you are in so many of our favourite photos. We said “I do”, you said “cheers”, and it was perfect. Thank you for celebrating with us.

For more formal phrasing, adapt the formal messages above, or borrow the register of our formal wedding invitation wording.

When Should You Send Wedding Thank You Cards?

There is no single rule, and expectations differ by country.

Typical timing for wedding thank you cards
SituationCommon expectation
Gifts received before the weddingWithin two to three weeks of the gift arriving
Gifts received on or after the day (UK)Within one to three months is generally seen as polite
Gifts received on or after the day (US)Many etiquette guides say within three months
Guests who gave no giftOptional, but a card within three months is a kind touch
Wedding party and suppliersSoon after the honeymoon, while the day is fresh

Late is far better than never. If a year has slipped by, send the card anyway with a short apology and the same warmth.

Digital vs Printed Wedding Thank You Notes

A handwritten card is still best for gifts, especially from older relatives. A personal digital message works for friends you message daily, guests who gave no gift, or as a quick thank you before the cards arrive.

Digital thank you: the morning after
Good morning! We’re still floating. Thank you for being part of yesterday. Proper cards to follow once we are back from Greece. Love, Sofia & Mateo
Digital thank you: sharing photos
Hi everyone! Thank you again for celebrating with us. The photos are in, and we have put our favourites on our wedding website with a little note from us both: [your website link]
Two phones: a group message thanking guests and linking to the wedding website, and the website’s photo gallery “Little Moments We Love”
A quick message after the day can point guests to your favourite photos; proper cards can follow.

Many couples keep their wedding website up after the day as a shared memory book. With Aurelia, you can keep editing until the site’s 12-month term ends: add up to 40 gallery photos, turn the closing message into a thank-you note, and tuck a printed QR card into your paper thank-you cards. See how long a wedding website should stay up for what to change afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good message for a wedding thank you card?
Thank the guest by name, mention their gift or what it will go towards, add one memory from the day, and sign with both your names.
What should I write for a cash wedding gift?
Call it a “generous gift” rather than naming the amount, then say what it will go towards, such as a house deposit, furniture or the honeymoon.
How do you thank someone who couldn’t attend?
Say you missed them, thank them for any card or gift, and suggest a time to catch up or share the photos.
Is it okay to send wedding thank you cards digitally?
Yes for close friends and guests who gave no gift, or as a quick note before cards arrive. For gifts, especially from older relatives, a handwritten card is still the safer choice.
Should wedding thank you cards be handwritten?
Ideally, yes. A printed card with a pre-printed message is fine as long as you add a handwritten personal line and sign it yourselves.

Keep your wedding memories in one beautiful place: create a wedding website with your photos, your story and a thank-you note for everyone who celebrated with you.
