Two languages need room to breathe, so choose a design with generous space. Browse our wedding invitation templates and type both languages straight into the text fields; layouts with letter-style cards handle longer text well.

Three ways to lay out a bilingual invitation

  • Stacked: the full invitation in one language, then the other underneath. The clearest option for most designs.
  • Side by side: two columns, one per language. Works on wide printed cards; on a phone, stacked reads better.
  • Mixed: a short welcome in both languages, with names, dates and places written once (they rarely need translating).

Names, dates in numerals and venue names are the same in every language, so a mixed layout is often shortest. On a digital invitation, the mixed or stacked approach is easiest to read on a small screen.

Which language goes first?

  • The language of the country where the wedding is held.
  • Or the language of the hosting family.
  • Or the language most guests speak.

Whichever you choose, give the second language equal weight in size and style, so no one feels like an afterthought.

Bilingual wording examples

These examples use common phrasings. Always have a native speaker check the final wording, as formality and regional usage vary.

Bilingual RSVP and practical lines

  • English / French: “Kindly reply by 1 May · Merci de répondre avant le 1er mai”
  • English / Spanish: “Please reply by 1 May · Por favor, confirmad asistencia antes del 1 de mayo”
  • English / Italian: “Please reply by 1 May · Si prega di rispondere entro il 1° maggio”
  • English / German: “Please reply by 1 May · Bitte gebt uns bis zum 1. Mai Bescheid”

Spanish, Italian and German each have formal and informal “you”. Use the informal form for friends and the formal one for older relatives or a formal wedding, and keep it consistent. For more reply lines in English, see wedding RSVP wording.

Translation tips

  • Translate meaning, not word for word. “Request the pleasure of your company” has no exact equivalent in most languages.
  • Check date formats: “4 September” in the UK, “4 septembre” in French, “4. September” in German.
  • Check times: many countries use the 24-hour clock (16:00).
  • Ask a native speaker from the right region. Spanish in Spain and Mexico differs.
  • Keep names, venues and links identical in both versions.

Multicultural ceremonies

If your wedding blends two traditions, such as a tea ceremony and a civil ceremony, list each event with a short explanation on your website, so guests from both sides know what to expect, what to wear and when to arrive. Our destination wedding invitation wording guide covers multi-day schedules, and who’s hosting wording helps when both families host.

Bilingual wedding invitation questions

How do you write a wedding invitation in two languages?
Write the full invitation in one language and repeat it in the second, either stacked or side by side. Keep names, dates and places identical, and give both languages equal visual weight.
Which language should come first on a bilingual invitation?
Usually the language of the country hosting the wedding or of the hosting family. If guests are split evenly, choose the language most guests read first.
Should I use a translation app for my wedding invitation?
Use it as a starting point only. Ask a native speaker to check the final wording, as apps often miss formality, idiom and regional usage.
Can a digital wedding invitation be bilingual?
Yes. You can write both languages into the invitation text. Stacked layouts read best on phones.
